Has your OR implemented a surgical checklist yet? In this issue, you can learn more about checklists in the OR.  We are also pleased to introduce NIFA's new enrollment consultant, Robert Prince, CST.

Checklists in the OR

Just as airplane pilots and copilots run through a safety checklist before the plane takes off, a comprehensive surgical checklist recently became standard in all New York City hospitals.

In a report last Nov. 26 on WABC news, medical reporter Dr. Jay Adlersberg said, "Surgeons are voluntarily adopting the use of a comprehensive surgical checklist based on recommendations by the World Health Organization to help reduce the risk of complications and death. . . . The plan is designed to target the three biggest causes of mortality in surgery - preventable infections, preventable complications from bleeding and safety in anesthesia."

Staff Profile:  Robert Prince, CST

As Enrollment Consultant for NIFA's SA250 Surgical First Assistant program, Robert Prince, CST, is at your service.

"I'm here to provide support and guidance for surgical techs to take whatever is the next logical step to advance their surgical tech career," he says.

"I will guide you through the enrollment process for NIFA's program and answer questions about NIFA's training and SA careers in general--for example, being on staff at a medical center versus working privately in your own Surgical Assistant practice."

Robert is a Nationally Board Certified Surgical Technologist who graduated from the U.S. Air Force School of Healthcare Sciences with honors and holds certificates in Surgical Technology and Mental Health. He received awards and recognition as a certified surgical technologist during the Gulf War, is certified in cardiac life support for healthcare providers, and has been a team leader and trainer of OR personnel in civilian and government hospitals. He has also worked in surgical/medical device and implant sales and marketing, as a clinical spine specialist, and as a full-time surgical technology instructor.

Along the way, he decided he wanted to write a book about how to become successful in surgical technology.

"About five years into my surgical tech career, I started writing a book in my head," he says. "It stayed in my head for about 10 years and finally, during a hurricane season in '04 (I live in Florida) I was sitting here--no power, no electricity, nothing. I grabbed the notes I kept over the years, a couple of yellow pads and started writing. After I wrote the book, I started marketing it and decided to build a website around my book. I ultimately created www.SurgicalTechSuccess.com."

Today that website offers more than 100 pages of information for surgical techs, and it's growing all the time. You can order Robert's book, the Surgical Tech Success Handbook, learn about surgical tech jobs, certifications and careers--even order scrubs and supplies directly from the website. You can also sign up for a weekly e-newsletter full of surgical tech success tips.

These days, in addition to running the website, Robert is a Surgical Tech Entrepreneur, actively working as a student consultant for NIFA and as a freelance consultant writing surgical tech school curriculum. He also is a spinal implant consultant and trainer and has occasional speaking engagements.

But he's not too busy to communicate with you. Our readers are invited to contact Robert at any time with questions about your surgical tech career. His email is robertprince@nifa.com.

Welcome aboard, Robert Prince!
