Many of our students and graduates know NIFAŽ surgeon
faculty member Dr. Geelhoed as a visiting instructor at the SutureStar™
Workshops. But, did you know that Dr. Geelhoed is currently the head of
International Surgery at George Washington University Medical Center and was George
Magazine’s
“Humanitarian of the Year” 2000 as well as 2009’s
American College of Surgeon’s
‘Volunteers
of the Year?’
Were you also aware that
since 1966 he has spent from three to six months of every year acting as a
medical missionary—serving the neediest of people (he affectionately calls the
world’s Bottom Billion) and training non-MDs and MDs to continue in his absence?
“I’m an American; I’ve been on the receiving end of a whole lot of advantages
and have not even paid back the interest,” exclaims Dr. Geelhoed.

NIFA encourages all first assistants to get involved in a
surgical mission. First, please understand that NIFA
cannot arrange surgical missions for its students or graduates with Dr. Geelhoed
or any other surgical mission organization. Secondly, whereas many of you were
hoping to assist Dr. Geelhoed personally; he has his own first assistants
already scheduled in the foreseeable future.
If you are interested in working with Mission to Heal,
please do not contact NIFA. You would need to visit
http://www.medicalmissionhalloffamefoundation.org/donate.html and go
through the normal Volunteer application process to find out if they can use
your services. We are compiling a list of other possible organizations you could
offer to volunteer for to be placed on this page in the near future.
